stories through music

Having been raised listening to classical and orchestral compositions, I have developed an immense passion for crafting cinematic music. In particular, music that helps transport the listener to a specific setting or mood. When composing orchestral originals, I imagine or take inspiration from a setting, story, or character and bring it to life. It has proven a great exercise in improving my ability to create the transportive music I aim for. exploration and discovery

I conceptualized this piece during my play-through of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. I sought to capture the sense of discovery and adventure that the player feels while exploring the open world. Specifically, this track was inspired by the forested areas of the game world, and the idea first came to mind while travelling through the lost woods. The track starts off with an almost ominous repetitious melody and progresses into an ambient soundscape I imagine following the player throughout their travels.

battle BEATS

This composition initially started as a boss battle theme for an unannounced project, though later morphed into an Epic Trap/Orchestral hybrid showcasing a haunting melody in the breakdown. I wanted it to start and end big with choirs and horns, while maintaining a melodic progression to draw the listener in emotionally.

Haunting Melodies

This piece prominently features a somber cello melody over an ethereal backing. The composition is meant to convey the “beauty in war”. I imagined this song as the accompaniment to the aftermath of a devastating battle. The tone is somber, but there is still hope lingering for a better future. The solo cello progression is joined by a choir later in the track to express this point. This track makes use use of manipulated organic elements to add atmosphere to the backing elements, and I incorporated hints of some eastern instrumentation for added flair and diversity.

Hybrid Progression

This piece aims to fuse melodic orchestral and electronic elements to create a bigger than life hybrid soundscape. I was inspired by the depictions of future cities in Sci-Fi media and the potential merging of the real and digital world. The title “Digital Children” represents the generations born within that space. A large, almost overwhelming mesh of melodic elements eventually resolve into a solo piano outro that represents the longing for a return to a “true reality”, even if the digital world could be considered a utopia.

I heavily processed and stretched vocals to create the initial hybrid vox melody. The ongoing repetitive electronic melody presented in the intro serves that main drive for the rest of the song until the solo piano ending. There is a heavy use of choir for a more ethereal feel throughout.

evolving motifs

I wrote this piece to represent rising above from past turmoils and learning to understand how to better deal with an uncertain future. The darker, more melancholic timbre of the intro develops into a triumphant climax to represent moving on from a troubled past, with the return of a more melancholic timbre in the last section representing the return to uncertainty and the potential to go through this process again.

This piece begins by focusing on building upon 2 over 3 melodic repetition. Slowly more elements come in and the motif evolves and blends into an evolving soundscape of strings, bells and horns. The track then shifts to prominently feature a slow cello melody that blends with the choir and builds into the final climax of the piece before fading back into the initial timbre presented in the intro.

uplifting energies

This piece focuses on a driving and uplifting motif and leads into an epic climax. It was written with the intent of taking the listener on an adventure. The focus on the progression of a repeated motif helps present the almost ethereal quality I was aiming for even considering the more intense nature of the track.

Modest expressions

This solo piano composition drew inspiration from JRPG soundtracks. I aimed to write something that wouldn't sound out of place as a main menu theme for these kinds of games. Most of the track was actually written in one go as an improvisation, and then refined to improve upon the main melodic theme that is repeated throughout the song.
